As we journey through the winding roads and rolling meadows of Nyanga, adorned with Msasa trees in vibrant shades of yellow, brown, and green, Jeremy Clarkson’s words resonate with me: “He got to Zimbabwe and he thought, this is going to be my best work, this is going to be my greatest hit.” Zimbabwe’s landscapes are breathtaking, and a drive to the Eastern Highlands reveals a stunning version of the Swiss Alps right in our backyard.
The Eastern Highlands are special for so many reasons—clean air, picturesque roads, majestic mountains that tell stories, and a rich history. Many people I meet have memories of their grandparents or parents marrying here or visiting a cottage “just up the road from Troutbeck.” It’s this history, coupled with Nyanga’s beautiful backdrop, that breathes life into this place.
Our journey led us to Rupurara Valley Lodge, formerly known as The Inn on Rupurara. Originally opened in 1997 by the late Gordon Adams, this gem catered to dignitaries and locals alike. After closing for a few years, it has now been revitalized by Cresta Hotels. Located 256 km from Harare, the lodge evokes nostalgia, particularly for our host, Stan Higgins. He fondly recalls Gordon Adams’ vision for this boutique hotel, with plans for 18 rooms overlooking the stunning landscape. Those same lodges now stand before us, refreshed and contemporary.
Rupurara Valley Lodge is nestled among rocks and natural vegetation, creating an enchanting atmosphere. The Cape Country-style architecture and elevated position offer stunning mountain views. After checking in, I was shown to my room by Benjamin, one of the staff, who excitedly pointed out “the bald man”—a granite mountain called “Rupurara” in the local dialect, after which the lodge is named.
Reviving a historic hotel comes with the challenge of balancing its legacy with modern touches. Cresta Hotels has achieved this beautifully. The rooms blend contemporary luxury with colonial charm, offering modern amenities, comfortable beds, and breathtaking views. Each room provides a unique perspective, whether of the dam, mountains, or valley below. Watching the sunset from your veranda is a must!
The lodge features 18 elegantly designed lodges and rooms, accommodating up to 36 guests. The Waterfront suites overlook a tranquil water feature, while the Valley View suites offer spectacular mountain vistas. All rooms are en-suite, tastefully decorated in early Cape style, and open onto generous covered verandas. Room heaters ensure comfort during chilly mountain evenings.
Lodges 1 to 6 are single-standing units with a cream and lavender theme. Lodges 7 to 18 are semi-detached, ideal for families, with twin and double-bedded rooms. Two units have inter-leading balconies. The rooms exude an ethereal aesthetic, combining greys and dark wood furniture for a cozy, inviting atmosphere. The bathrooms offer a choice of a tub or walk-in rainfall shower, perfectly complementing the sleek bedroom design.
Rupurara Valley Lodge is the result of meticulous planning by the Cresta Hotels team, aiming to rekindle a love for the Eastern Highlands among locals and international visitors. The lodge is set within a vast estate, a paradise for bird lovers with sightings of rare species. Relax on your veranda with a book, or visit the Gairezi bar to quench your thirst. The Miombo restaurant serves delicious, freshly prepared meals, thanks to a talented young chef whose enthusiasm shines through.
Nyanga offers a wealth of exploration opportunities, known for leisure and sporting amenities, including golf at the Claremont course, scenic walks, trout fishing, game viewing, and birding. The lodge is conveniently located near local attractions, including waterfalls, two golf courses, and a casino.
